Grab Hold of the Week Like That Ex Who Just Wouldn’t Let Go

Something about spring, the more agreeable weather and the additional daylight gets me back on the motivation train. The last few weeks have been marked by significant progress on the new novel, Mystery White Boy, and a couple of great events where people responded well to work both old and new.

But Monday’s are still hard for most of us, particularly as the weather grows better. Because you’re able to jam more fun into the weekend, the hangover seems extra severe when 7 a.m. on the first workday of the week rolls around. So what better to get you going than a healthy dose of good, solid rock.

Ron Gallo is a Philadelphia kid (highlighted with his shout-out to the Kensington strangler) who relocated to Nashville to polish his musical chops and recently burst forth onto the scene with the tune “Young Lady, You’re Scaring Me,” which I can’t help turning up to 11 every time it pops up in my music stream. It’s a perfect rock representation of that lover you suspect is borderline psychotic and/or dangerously obsessed.

Combine that with a wall of words that I, as a longtime Elvis Costello fan, have come to love and appreciate, then tack on a three-man wall of sound that’s at once modern and also reminiscent of classic guitar/bass/drum warriors like Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, and you really can’t go wrong.

What’s always the most disconcerting about the obsessed lover is their persistence – all you want is for them to let it go and stay away, and yet … they just keep coming around.

Not that you should become a candidate for a restraining order related to the object of romance in your life, but consider that dogged persistence – that complete unwillingness to give up – as you embark on your life’s journey this week.

There are plenty of things that get in the way of our goals if we let them. Part of the trick to achieving those goals is brazenly pushing past what’s in our way.

Just try not to burn anyone’s house down in the process.
