Been hearing a lot about a certain Clinton testifying before Congress for something or other. Pretty sure it’s not this Clinton, though.
I always got the feeling when I was working in the full-time office world that – despite the diverse and disparate personalities that surrounded me in the newspaper business – I was always considered one of the worker bees who was a little … off.
Former co-workers can render their own opinions on this, but a few might agree that there was something a bit different about that Pruden guy (whether it was in a good or bad way is up for discussion). I distinctly recall this conversation between me and the day city editor at one newspaper who was filling in for the normal Sunday city editor.

It’s hard to recall that there was ever anything wrong with Pixar, but anyone who watched the short subject Tin Toy, which preceded the release of Toy Story by seven years, knows that the studio’s animators had a LONG way to go with figuring out how to render the faces of anything other than children’s playthings. Honestly, the hyper-realistic baby from that brief bit of animation way back in 1988 still kinda creeps me out, and if I had viewed this first at a much younger age I’m sure the negative effects would still be rattling around in my subconscious. “Show some maturity!”
“Get a real job!”
If you hear any of these comments directed at you as an adult, you’re in the presence of a soul killer. Distance yourself from that person immediately, because anyone who is under the mistaken impression that we humans ever really grow beyond our need for play and whimsy is someone you probably don’t want to spend any more time with, lest you be sucked into their old-person world view and join them in the “Get Off My Lawn!” Club.
If you don’t get it, it’s because you haven’t seen it. And if you haven’t seen it, you really, really should.
One benefit to having an “office” career that largely consisted of doing cool and unexpected things or meeting interesting people at any given moment – then writing about them – was that since I finished school I’ve only infrequently experienced the typical “Monday dread.”
You know – that Sunday evening feeling where it’s impossible to enjoy anything later than 4 p.m. because you’re already feeling the crushing weight of week’s first work day bearing down on you like a ravenous warthog.
